MEANING<\/span><\/b><br \/><span style=\"font-family: Garamond; font-size: 14PT;\"><em>Zakat al-Fitr <\/em>is often referred to as <em>Sadaqah al-Fitr<\/em>. The word <em>Fitr <\/em>means the same as <em>Iftar<\/em>, breaking a fast and it comes from the same root word as <em>Futoor<\/em> which means breakfast. Thus, Islamically, <em>Zakat al-Fitr<\/em> is the name given to charity which is distributed at the end of the fast of Ramadan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Garamond; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>2. CLASSIFICATION<br \/><span style=\"font-family: Garamond; font-size: 14pt;\"><\/span><\/strong><em>Sadaqat al-Fitr i<\/em>s a duty which is <em>wajib<\/em> on every Muslim, whether male or female, minor or adult as long as he\/she has the means to do so.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Garamond; font-size: 14pt;\">The proof that this form of charity is compulsory can be found in the Sunnah whereby Ibn `Umar reported that the Prophet \ufdfa made <em>Zakat al-Fitr<\/em> compulsory on every slave, freeman, male, female, young and old among the Muslims; one <em>sa`<\/em> of dried dates or one <em>sa`<\/em> of barely. [collected by Bukhari \u2013 Arabic\/English, vol. 2, p. 339, no. 579]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Garamond; font-size: 14pt;\">The head of the household may pay the required amount for the other members. Abu Sa`eed al-Khudree <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3670 \" src=\"https:\/\/naqshbandi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/radiya.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"18\" height=\"15\" srcset=\"https:\/\/naqshbandi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/radiya.gif 28w, https:\/\/naqshbandi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/radiya-15x12.gif 15w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 18px) 100vw, 18px\" \/> said, \u201cOn behalf of our young and old, free men and slaves, we used to take out during Allah\u2019s Messenger\u2019s \ufdfa lifetime one <em>sa`<\/em> of grain, cheese or raisins\u201d. [collected by Muslim \u2013 English transl. vol. 2, p. 469, no. 2155]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Garamond; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>3. SIGNIFICANCE<br \/><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Garamond; font-size: 14pt;\">The significant role played by Zakat in the circulation of wealth within the Islamic society is also played by the<em> Sadaqat al-Fitr<\/em>. However, in the case of <em> Sadaqat al-Fitr<\/em>, each individual is required to calculate how much charity is due from himself and his dependents and go into the community in order to find those who deserve such charity. Thus, <em> Sadaqat al-Fitr<\/em> plays a very important role in the development of the bonds of community. The rich are obliged to come in direct contact with the poor, and the poor are put in contact with the extremely poor. This contact between the various levels of society helps to build real bonds of brotherhood and love within the Islamic community and trains those who have, to be generous to those who do not have.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Garamond; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>4. PURPOSE<br \/><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Garamond; font-size: 14pt;\">The main purpose of <em> Sadaqat al-Fitr<\/em> is to provide those who fasted with the means of making up for their errors during the month of fasting. <em> Sadaqat al-Fitr<\/em> also provides the poor with a means with which they can celebrate the festival of breaking the fast (<em>`Eid al<\/em>&#8211;<em>Fitr<\/em>) along with the rest of the Muslims.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Garamond; font-size: 14pt;\">Ibn Abbas <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3670 \" src=\"https:\/\/naqshbandi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/radiya.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"18\" height=\"15\" srcset=\"https:\/\/naqshbandi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/radiya.gif 28w, https:\/\/naqshbandi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/radiya-15x12.gif 15w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 18px) 100vw, 18px\" \/> reported, \u201cThe Prophet \ufdfa made <em>Zakat al-Fitr<\/em> compulsory so that those who fasted may be purified of their idle deeds and shameful talk (committed during Ramadan) and so that the poor may be fed. Whoever gives it before <em>Salat<\/em> will have it accepted as Zakat, while he who gives it after the <em>Salat<\/em> has given <em>Sadaqah<\/em>.\u201d [collected by Abu Dawood \u2013 Eng. transl. vol. 2, p. 421, no. 1605 \u2013 rated Saheeh]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Garamond; font-size: 14pt;\">Hence, the goal of<em> Sadaqat al-Fitr<\/em> is the spiritual development of the Believers. By making them give up some of their wealth, the believers are taught the higher moral characteristics of generosity, compassion (sympathy for the unfortunate), gratitude to God and the righteousness. But, since Islam does not neglect man\u2019s material need, part of the goal of <em>Zakat al-Fitr<\/em> is the economic well-being of the poorer members of society.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Garamond; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>5. CONDITIONS<br \/><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Garamond; font-size: 14pt;\"><em>Zakat al-Fitr<\/em> is only <em>wajib<\/em> for a particular period of time. If one misses the time period without a good reason, he has sinned and can not make it up. This form of charity becomes obligatory from sunset on the last day of fasting and remains obligatory until the beginning of Salat al-\u2019Eid\u2019 (i.e. shortly after sunrise on the following day). However, it can be paid prior to the above mentioned period, as many of the Sahabah (companions of the Prophet \ufdfa used to pay <em>Sadaqat al-Fitr<\/em> a couple days before the `Eid.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Garamond; font-size: 14pt;\">After the spread of Islam the\u00a0jurists\u00a0permitted its payment from the beginning and middle of Ramadan so as to ensure that the\u00a0<i>Zakat al-Fitr<\/i> reached its beneficiaries on the day of `Eid. It is particularly emphasized by our <em>mashaykh<\/em> that the distribution be <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">before the `Eid prayers<\/span><\/strong> in order that the needy who receive are able to use the\u00a0<i>fitr<\/i>\u00a0to provide for their dependents on the day of `Eid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Garamond; font-size: 14pt;\">Nafi` reported that the Prophet\u2019s companion Ibn `Umar <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3670 \" src=\"https:\/\/naqshbandi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/radiya.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"18\" height=\"15\" srcset=\"https:\/\/naqshbandi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/radiya.gif 28w, https:\/\/naqshbandi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/radiya-15x12.gif 15w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 18px) 100vw, 18px\" \/> used to give it to those who would accept it and the people used to give it a day or two before the `Eid. [collected by al-Bukhari \u2013 Arabic\/English, Vol. 2, p.339, no. 579]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Garamond; font-size: 14pt;\">Ibn `Umar <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3670 \" src=\"https:\/\/naqshbandi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/radiya.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"18\" height=\"15\" srcset=\"https:\/\/naqshbandi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/radiya.gif 28w, https:\/\/naqshbandi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/radiya-15x12.gif 15w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 18px) 100vw, 18px\" \/> reported that the Prophet \ufdfa order that it (<em>Zakat al-Fitr<\/em>) be given before people go to make the <em>Salat (al-\u2019Eid<\/em>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Garamond; font-size: 14pt;\">And Ibn `Abbas <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3670 \" src=\"https:\/\/naqshbandi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/radiya.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"18\" height=\"15\" srcset=\"https:\/\/naqshbandi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/radiya.gif 28w, https:\/\/naqshbandi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/radiya-15x12.gif 15w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 18px) 100vw, 18px\" \/> reported that the Prophet \ufdfa said, \u201cWhoever gives it before the <em>salat<\/em> will have it accepted as <em>Zakat<\/em>, while he who gives it after the <em>Salat<\/em> (will not, for it will only be considered as) ordinary charity. Therefore, one who forgets to pay this<em> Zakat al-Fitr<\/em> on time should do so as soon as possible even though it will not be counted as <em>Zakat al-Fitr.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Garamond; font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>6. RATE<br \/><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Garamond; font-size: 14pt;\">The amount of Zakat is the same for everyone regardless of their different income brackets. The minimum amount is one<em> sa`<\/em> (two handfuls ) of food, grain or dried fruit for each member of the family. This calculation is based on Ibn `Umar\u2019s report that the Prophet \ufdfa made<em> Zakat al-Fitr<\/em> compulsory and payable by a<em> sa`<\/em> of dried dates or a <em>sa`<\/em> of barley.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Garamond; font-size: 14pt;\"><span>The Hanafi school permits paying <em>Zakat al-Fitr<\/em> in the form of cash, equivalent to the above amount, while this is not permitted Maliki, Shafi&#8217;i and Hanbali schools. <\/span><sup id=\"cite_ref-10\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><span>Using cash as a form of payment became the adopted position by many official fataw councils around the world.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Garamond; font-size: 14pt;\"><sup id=\"cite_ref-11\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-12\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>The Sahabi, Abu Sa`eed al-Khudree <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3670 \" src=\"https:\/\/naqshbandi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/radiya.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"18\" height=\"15\" srcset=\"https:\/\/naqshbandi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/radiya.gif 28w, https:\/\/naqshbandi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/radiya-15x12.gif 15w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 18px) 100vw, 18px\" \/> said, \u201cIn the Prophet\u2019s time, we used to give it (<em>Zakat al-Fitr<\/em>) as a <em>sa<\/em>` of food, dried dates, barley, raisins or dried cheese\u201d.
