Whoever prays\u00a0<i>Taraweeh<\/i>\u00a0as it should be prayed has prayed at night (<i>qiyam al-layl<\/i>) in Ramadan.<br \/><span style=\"font-family: Garamond; font-size: 14pt;\">Forgiveness is conditional upon \u201cfaith and hope of reward,\u201d as stated here. What is meant by \u201cfaith\u201d is that when the person stands to pray\u00a0<i>qiyam<\/i>, he believes in Allah, may He be exalted, and believes in His promise and in the virtue of praying\u00a0<i>qiyam<\/i>, and in the greatness of its reward with Allah. \u201cHope of reward\u201d means that he is seeking the reward from Allah and is not doing it for any other purpose such as showing off, etc.<br \/><span style=\"font-family: Garamond; font-size: 14pt;\">It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to encourage them to pray<i>qiyam<\/i>\u00a0during Ramadan, without commanding them to do it. Then he said: \u201cWhoever prays at night in Ramadan out of faith and in the hope of reward, his previous sins will be forgiven.\u201d<br \/>So the Muslim should be keen to pray\u00a0<i>Taraweeh<\/i>, and should be patient in completing the prayer with his imam. He should not neglect any part of it, or leave before his imam, even if his imam does more than eleven or thirteen rak\u2019ahs, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: \u201cWhoever prays\u00a0<i>qiyam<\/i>\u00a0with the imam until he finishes, it will be recorded that he spent the night in\u00a0<i>qiyam<\/i>.\u201d It is only a few nights, which the wise man makes the most of before they are gone.<br \/><span style=\"font-family: Garamond; font-size: 14pt;\">Abu Dawud said: It was said to [Imam] Ahmad while I was listening: \u201cCan\u00a0<i>qiyam<\/i>\u00a0\u2013 i.e.,\u00a0<i>Taraweeh<\/i>\u00a0\u2013 be delayed until the end of the night?\u201d He said: \u201cThe way of the Muslims is dearer to me.\u201d<br \/><span style=\"font-family: Garamond; font-size: 14pt;\">If a person is keen to pray whatever rak\u2019ahs he wants to at the time of the pre-dawn (suhoor time), then he should not pray\u00a0<i>witr<\/i>\u00a0again at the end of his prayer, rather it is sufficient for him to pray\u00a0<i>witr<\/i>\u00a0with his imam in\u00a0<i>Taraweeh<\/i>, because of the hadith of Talq ibn \u2018Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: \u201cThere cannot be two\u00a0<i>witrs<\/i>\u00a0in one night.\u201d<br \/>With regard to the hadith of Ibn \u2018Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) \u2013 according to which the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: \u201cMake the last of your prayers at night\u00a0<i>witr<\/i>\u201d \u2013 this is to be understood as referring to one who prays at the end of the night and did not pray witr at the beginning of the night.<br \/><span style=\"font-family: Garamond; font-size: 14pt;\">The command here is to be understood as a recommendation, not an obligation. It is not essential to conclude the prayer at the end of the night with witr, based on the fact that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) prayed at the end of the night, after his\u00a0<i>witr<\/i>.<span style=\"font-family: Garamond; font-size: 14pt;\"><br \/>Abu Dawud said: I said to Ahmad: \u201cDoes praying after\u00a0<i>witr<\/i>\u00a0invalidate\u00a0<i>witr<\/i>?\u201d He said: \u201cNo.\u201d Abu Dawud said: I heard Ahmad say concerning one who prayed\u00a0<i>witr<\/i>\u00a0at the beginning of the night then got up to pray\u00a0<i>qiyam<\/i>: \u201cHe should pray two rak\u2019ahs.\u201d<br \/>It was said: \u201cDoes he not have to pray\u00a0<i>witr<\/i>?\u201d<br \/>He said: \u201cNo.\u201d<br \/>He said: I heard someone ask him about someone who wanted to pray after\u00a0<i>witr<\/i>: \u201cshould he pray two by two?\u201d<br \/>He said: \u201cYes, but after\u00a0<i>witr<\/i>\u00a0he should lie down.\u201d<br \/><span style=\"font-family: Garamond; font-size: 14pt;\">The imam should take care to pray properly in\u00a0<i>Taraweeh<\/i>. He should pray with proper focus and humility, reciting in a proper manner and being at ease in\u00a0<i>ruku<\/i>\u2018 and\u00a0<i>sujud<\/i>. He should beware of rushing lest he fails\u00a0to attain the proper level of\u00a0<i>khushu<\/i>\u2018 (focus and humility) and lest he make the weak, elderly and sick among the people behind him get too tired.<br \/>Al-Sa\u2019ib ibn Yazeed said: &#8220;\u2018Umar ibn al-Khattab commanded Ubayy ibn Ka\u2019b and Tameem al-Dari to lead the people in praying eleven rak\u2019ahs of <i>qiyam<\/i>.
