It is of three gradations reflecting the stages of the journey to the Divine Presence:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the <em>dhikr<\/em> of the common people by the tongue;<\/li>\n<li>the <em>dhikr<\/em> of the special people by the heart;<\/li>\n<li>the <em>dhikr<\/em> of the Elect of the Special by their Annihilation in their <em>Dhikr<\/em> [<em>Fana\u2019un `an dhikrihim<\/em>], when they see the One they are Remembering and are annihilated in His Presence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Imam Ghazali said, \u201cYou must know that Allah removed all the veils of ignorance and brought people to the state of vision through their continuous <em>Dhikr<\/em>. The first stage of <em>Dhikr<\/em> is the <em>Dhikr<\/em> of the Tongue, then the <em>Dhikr<\/em> of the Heart, then the Appearance of the Divine Presence in the reciter of <em>dhikr<\/em>, making him no longer need to do <em>dhikr<\/em>.\u201d<sup>13<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Shaikh al-Munawi said, \u201cFor the seeker in Allah\u2019s Way, the thing of highest benefit to him is dhikr with the name, \u2018Allah,\u2019 whereby he will taste and see the Love of the Divine Presence [<em>adh-dhawq wal hubbu fillah<\/em>].\u201d<sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Imam Junaid said, \u201cWhoever made <em>Dhikr<\/em> with the all- encompassing Name, \u2018Allah,\u2019 is the one who left himself behind, connecting to His Lord, existing in His presence, looking at Him through his heart, where the Light of Allah has burned away his physical body.\u201d<sup>3<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Therefore, it is the practice of the grandshaikhs of the Naqshbandi Order to initiate their murids in dhikr with the Unique Name encompassing All Attributes, \u2018Allah,\u2019 and by negation and affirmation of the affirmation of faith, <i>la ilaha illa &#8216;Llah<\/i>. Through these two forms they will be able to reach the State of Ihsan, Perfection, which was mentioned by the Prophet in the hadith narrated by Bukhari and Muslim, \u201c<i>al-Ihsan<\/i> is to worship Allah as if you are seeing Him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya said, \u201cIf a person wants to be guided, he must look for a person who is from the People of <em>Dhikr<\/em>. If he found one who is from the People of <em>Dhikr<\/em>, keeping <em>Dhikr<\/em> continuously, and following the Sunnah of the Prophet <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/naqshbandi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/salla.gif\" alt=\"salla\" width=\"17\" height=\"18\" \/>, he must stick to him.\u201d<sup>4<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Ibn Hajar al-Haythami said, \u201cThe seeker in the first stages, before reaching to the stage of Knower, must obey the orders of his shaikh, who is carrying both knowledges, the Divine knowledge and the knowledge of the <em>Shari\u2019ah<\/em>, because he is the Great Physician who has tasted and sensed all the Heavenly Wisdom through keeping the <em>Dhikr<\/em> in his heart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>_______________________________<\/p>\n<p>Notes<\/p>\n<p>1.
