Shaykh Hisham Muhammad Kabbani was a featured speaker at Hillsdale College's CCA weeklong series on "How to Think About Islam". The other speaker that evening was former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. Shaykh Kabbani addressed the topic of understanding the Quran, and examined the different theological and legal perspectives which Muslims have held in regards to the Quran and its interpretation and the development of the various schools of Islamic doctrine, law and interpretation.

Before the event he was interviewed by the local college paper and attended a reception with Hillsdale alumni and other guests.

Islam CCA not 'so Hillsdale'

Timothy Caspar, director of seminars, said he hopes “the students will be able to think clearly and intelligently about Islam and learn how to respond to 9/11.”

Student Coordinator, Carisa Bergen, said the CCA’s goal was to “try to be an open balance . . . make a way for students to think about whether or not, for example, the Koran is the word of God... and come to their own opinion,” she said.
“The title ‘How to Think about Islam’ is misleading. The purpose of the CCA is not to tell people how to think.”

Bergen said the original title was to be “Understanding Islam.”
The order of the speakers—pro Islam speakers earlier in the week and speakers with a more negative view later—was done because of speakers schedules but also to give students a background on Islam first, Zimmerman said.

“Mostly it is scheduling that determines the order, but we tried to give people a good background in Islam with the initial speakers first and then go into opinions,” she said.

"How to Think About Islam"

September 15-20, 2002

  • What is Islamic civilization?
  • Why has it developed so differently from Western civilization during the modern era?
  • Is Islamic doctrine compatible with religious pluralism and constitutional democracy?
  • What are the roots of Islamic anti-Western terrorism?
  • How do we achieve peace?

"This first CCA of the 2002-2003 academic year will consider these and other timely questions regarding Islam."
