Pretoria and Johannesburg

November 15, 2000

The day began in Pretoria with Salat Tahajud at the home of Ahmed Arabee. Following Salat al-Subh and wazaif, Shaykh Nazim went to the home of Yusuf Tar for breakfast.

The group then visited various Islamic centers, madrasas and mosques, many very close to each other in the wealthy Muslim section of Pretoria called Laudium.

The Pretoria Sunna Madrasa, where Shaykh nazim visited with the students gathered in the courtyard.

Shaykh Nazim then visited the Al-Ghazali Islamic School. Situated on the edge of the city, near to shantytowns, the school is the primary vehicle for da`wa in the Pretoria region. Hundreds of non-Muslim families send their children to attend the school and to become Muslim, many later adapting the religion themselves.

Organized and run by seven Ugandan Muslims, these knowledgeable teachers provide a full education to the children, including arithmetic, reading, writing, social studies and history, in addition to Quranic Arabic, recitation of Mawlid and other beautiful chants.

Shaykh Nazim particularly approved of this work, something he encouraged whereever he went. He asked the principal, Shaykh Ibrahim, to note down all things the school and teachers were in need of and give him the list. Shaykh Nazim then gave the list to the Pretoria Muslim community leaders with the stipulation that they try to fulfill these needs as a form of sadaqa and a vehicle for da`wa.

Mawlana was then taken by car to Johannesburg, to the home of Ismail Dursot, a local businessman. There an excellent meal was served before Salat al-Isha.

Salat al-Isha was held at the "chisti-Sabri" Mosque in Johannesburg. There Mawlana led a 2nd jama`at for Salat al-Isha.
Shaykh Nazim gave a strong talk, warning of Wahabi infiltration of Tariqats in this area. He led Dhikr, followed by Salawat and Salaam led by Imam Hassen Walele, then quickly returned to the home of Ismail Dursot, where he spent the night. Many people followed the Shaykh home and took baya` there.
