The
Shaykh spoke of the modernity and activism of Sufism, which represents the
essence of Islam. He noted that Tasawwuf, known as Sufism, has its origins
in the time of the Prophet (s), when Ahl as-Suffah, the People of the
Bench, used to gather behind the home of the Prophet (s). These devotees,
were zuhaad, ascetics, who did not work for a living, but who
sought only nearness to the Prophet (s) and by his means, nearness to
Allah. He spoke of the essentiality of sincerity, for works done
without sincerity are of no value in the Divine Presence. He then opened
the most important aspect of his talk: the light of Prophet (s) and the
reality of the Prophet's (s) nearness to Allah. The Shaykh stressed the
importance of the Sunnah in building one's spiritual side, for it is only
through following the Prophet of Allah that the seeker will develop true
self-knowledge, gnosis. At that time, when raised to the station of
sincerity and perfected through remembrance of Allah and praise of the
Prophet (s), the seeker will be granted to hear the praising of all
creation. That conscious hearing is the first step towards knowing
oneself, which then is the first step in ma`rifatullah, gnosis:
"Whoever knows himself, know his Lord."
The
crowd of over 2000 persons was thrilled by the Shaykh’s speech.
